Some of us don’t freeze when life gets hard.
We run. We plan. We stay in motion so we don’t have to feel the ache.
You may look like you have it all together. The to-do list stays checked. You’re the one people lean on. But inside, there’s a restlessness that never quite quiets down. You’re tired—but when you try to slow down, something inside says, “You can’t stop. Keep going.”
This may not just be anxiety.
This could be your flight response.
🏃♀️ What Is the Flight Response?
The flight response is one of the body’s natural survival instincts, part of the fight–flight–freeze–fawn trauma response system. When your nervous system perceives danger, it mobilizes you to escape—physically, mentally, or emotionally.
But here’s the catch:
Sometimes, the danger isn’t current.
It’s old trauma, unfinished grief, or a childhood that didn’t feel safe.
And instead of fleeing from a bear in the woods, you flee into:
- Overworking or perfectionism
- Constant busyness or productivity
- Changing jobs, cities, or relationships frequently
- Difficulty resting or being present
- Panic when there’s nothing to “fix”
Your body is trying to protect you… but it’s stuck in the past.
🌀 Signs You Might Be Living in Flight Mode
- You have a hard time saying no or sitting still
- Silence or unstructured time makes you uneasy
- You’re always anticipating the next problem
- Sleep is restless or difficult, even when you’re exhausted
- You stay “useful” to avoid feeling unwanted or unworthy
🌿 How Therapy Helps
Flight mode isn’t a personal failure—it’s a nervous system doing its best to survive. But living in a chronic state of motion can take a toll on your health, relationships, and sense of self.
At Willow Bloom Counseling in Mobile and Daphne, Alabama, I help clients:
- Learn to recognize the signs of a dysregulated nervous system
- Use somatic and grounding techniques to feel safe in stillness
- Gently explore the roots of their flight response
- Reclaim rest as a form of resilience, not weakness
Modalities like brainspotting can be especially helpful here—allowing the body to release trauma without needing to relive it through words.
💛 You Don’t Have to Keep Running
You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to feel safe in your body again.
Healing doesn’t always look like doing more—it often looks like doing less, but with more presence.
If you’re ready to stop running from your past and start reconnecting with yourself, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.
